Fuel Classification 2024
The fuel classification is used as the frame for describing the consumption of fuels, electricity and heat. The classification is used in the data collections of the statistics on energy use in manufacturing and the statistics on electricity and heat production, as well as in the greenhouse gas inventory at Statistics Finland. In addition, the classification is the basis for the Energy Authority's emissions monitoring related to emissions trading and on monitoring electricity produced by renewable energy sources entitling to production subsidy. Finnish Energy also utilises the classification in its own production of statistics.
A more extensive version of the fuel classification also includes the default caloric values and emission coefficients of fuels and the default densities of certain fuels.
The fuel classification is at the 4-digit level. The most detailed level is used in the data collection.
The legal basis has been created for energy statistics with the Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on energy statistics (1099/2008), which entered into force at the beginning of 2009. The Regulation on energy statistics has been supplemented with European Commission Regulations (844/2010/EU), (147/2013/EU), (431/2014/EU) and (2017/2010/EU) and it will also be further supplemented with new acts.
