Municipalities in Finland 2006
The purpose of regional classifications used in statistics is to describe regional variations of various phenomena and regional structure. As most regional classifications, the municipal division is based on the administrative regional division.
Municipality is the basic regional unit for most statistics. In addition to statistics compilation, the classification system of municipalities is suitable for use in other information systems as well. The Digital and Population Data Services Agency issues numerical codes for municipalities according to the public administration recommendation. In 2006, the number of municipalities in Finland is 431.
Municipalities, sub-regional units, regions and the statistical grouping of municipalities are the primary regional classifications used in Finland's statistical system. Other municipality-based regional classifications used in statistics are major regions, Regional State Administrative Agencies (AVI) and Centres for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY centres). Types of municipalities include the cost-of-living classification, financial capacity classification, language distribution classification and municipality form classification.

Kullaa (293) and Ulvila (886) were united. The name of the new municipality is Ulvila, and the municipality code is 886.
Kuopio (297) and Vehmersalmi (919) were united. The name of the new municipality is Kuopio, and the municipality code is 297.
Loimaa (430) and Loimaan kunta (431) were united. The name of the new municipality is Loimaa, and the municipality code is 430.
Peräseinäjoki (589) and Seinäjoki (743) were united. The name of the new municipality is Seinäjoki, and the municipality code is 743.
Tohmajärvi (848) and Värtsilä (943) were united. The name of the new municipality is Tohmajärvi, and the municipality code is 848.
Regions
Punkalaidun (619) was moved from the region of Satakunta (04) to the region of Pirkanmaa (06). The change will only be recognised in statistics produced at the national level. It will not be recognised in statistics supplied to Eurostat, as they will be supplied in compliance with the NUTS classification.
The NUTS classification will next be reviewed in 2006 and it will enter into force in 2008.
Sub-regional units
Mynämäki (503) was moved from the sub-regional unit of Vakka-Suomi (024) to that of Turku (023).
Punkalaidun (619) was moved from the sub-regional unit of Pori (043) to that of Lounais-Pirkanmaa (068).
The sub-regional unit of Kärkikunnat (094) was abolished, whereupon the municipality of Parikkala (580) was moved to the sub-regional unit of Imatra (093).
The sub-regional unit of Outokumpu (121) was abolished, whereupon the municipalities of Outokumpu (309) and Polvijärvi (607) were moved to the sub-regional unit of
Joensuu (122).
The sub-regional unit of Ilomantsi (123) was abolished, whereupon the municipality of Ilomantsi (146) was moved to the sub-regional unit of Joensuu (122).
The sub-regional unit of Pohjoiset seinänaapurit (142) was renamed the sub-regional unitof Seinäjoki (142).
Employment and economic development centres
Punkalaidun (619) was moved from the employment and economic development centre of Satakunta (03) to that of Pirkanmaa (05).
Type of municipality
The type of municipality of Joutseno (173) was changed into urban municipality.
Statistical grouping of municipalities
The statistical grouping of Loimaa (430) was changed from urban municipality (1) to semiurban municipality (2).
The statistical grouping of Ulvila (886) was changed from urban municipality (1) to semiurban municipality (2).

Jäppilä (184), Pieksämäki (594) and Virtasalmi were united. The name of the new municipality is Pieksänmaa and municipality code is (640).
